History of the Chevy Colorado

The mid-size Colorado pickup joined Chevy’s lineup in the 2004 model year. Back then, the Colorado was considered a compact truck. Chevy designed the Colorado for mass appeal versus targeting traditional truck buyers. At that time, buyers wanted an escape from small SUVs and sedans but weren’t ready to commit to the bulk of a full-size half-ton pickup.

This explains why the Colorado was available in so many configurations. Buyers could choose between two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, along with three different cab styles: standard, extended, or crew cab. The lineup included three trims, but several add-on packages allowed buyers to equip the Colorado with additional capabilities. Among them was the Z71 off-road package.

The Colorado underwent its first redesign in 2013, and the second generation debuted in 2014. This version featured design cues borrowed from the larger Silverado pickup, along with a lighter frame. Initially offered in Base, WT, LT, or top-of-the-line Z71 trims, in 2017, Chevy launched the ZR2 trim geared specifically for serious off-roaders. It featured a 2-inch factory lift, aluminum skid plates, and electronic locking differentials in the front and rear.

Over the years, Chevy has tweaked the Colorado’s available powertrains, with more recent model years offered with a four or six-cylinder engine. The Colorado won MotorTrend’s prestigious Truck of the Year award in both 2015 and 2016, and with over 100,000 units sold annually since 2015, there are plenty of high-quality used Colorado trucks to be found.

The 2022 Colorado

The first thing you’ll probably notice about the 2022 Chevy Colorado is how affordable it is. Entry-level Colorado pickups are perfect for daily commuters and first-time buyers. With a starting price tag in the mid-$25,000 range, it’s a fun, budget-friendly alternative to the more typical compact SUV or sedan. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine delivers on fuel economy, too, coming in at 19 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway.

Four diverse trims make up the 2022 Colorado lineup, starting with the base WT (short for Work Truck). For a couple thousand more, buyers seeking additional creature comforts can choose the LT. The LT features an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a power driver’s seat, and a 6-speaker audio system. Choosing the LT also unlocks access to tons of equipment packages, so you can equip your Colorado with plenty of extras.

Weekend adventure seekers and off-roading enthusiasts will love the one-two punch of the Z71 and ZR2 trims. These souped-up Colorado models put capability high on the list, with a standard 3.6-liter V6 engine and four-wheel drive. The innovative Hill Descent Control feature helps drivers safely descend hills without relying on the brake pedal.

The ZR2 is reserved for hard-core trail riders. This Colorado is equipped for adventure, with standard front and rear locking differentials, bright red recovery hooks, and even a trailering package. A set of 17-inch Wrangler DuraTrac all-terrain tires come standard, and an available Duramax diesel engine ups torque to 369 lb-ft, enough to conquer just about any terrain.

Finding the Perfect Used Colorado

Here are some things to consider as you embark on your used Colorado pickup search. First, know that there are tons of trims and model years to choose from, including different drivetrains and engine configurations.

Prior to starting your search, consider how you’ll use your truck. Will you tow a small boat or RV? Do you have a long daily commute? Your lifestyle plays a big part in deciding which Colorado is right for you. For example, it might not make sense to spend more for four-wheel drive and a larger V6 engine if you’re buying a Colorado for daily driving, especially if you’re shopping on a budget. However, if you want a nicer cabin, focusing on a mid-range LT (LS for earlier versions) with extra comfort and convenience features could be your best fit. The point is, with such a diverse range of trucks to choose from, you won’t have to pay more for features you don’t want or need.

For off-roaders, remember that the Z71 trim is a staple across most Colorado model years, with the exception of first-generation versions. For first-gen Colorado trucks, you’ll find Z71 off-road equipment in an add-on package. The top-end ZR2 trim didn’t appear until 2017, but it’s remained a part of the lineup ever since. Prior to the arrival of the ZR2, the top-of-the-line Colorado trim was the Z71.

Across all Colorado truck generations, buyers will notice a few “facelift” model years. These are mid-cycle refreshers that ushered in big changes that weren’t quite extensive enough to warrant a redesign. Facelift years included 2007 (upgrades to the engine lineup and additional paint colors added), 2009 (first-ever Bluetooth system), and 2017 (first-ever touchscreen and SiriusXM satellite radio).
