Trailblazer History

The Chevy Trailblazer did not begin life as a vehicle. Rather, it was a trim on the 1999 Chevy Blazer SUV. In fact, it was the top-level trim available, with a single-disc CD player, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, alloy wheels, power front bucket seats, and a full-size spare tire. In addition, drivers could opt for available leather seats and a Bose premium audio system on the Trailblazer trim of the 1999 Chevy Blazer. This trim would prove so popular that the engineers at Chevy decided to make an entirely new SUV with the name Trailblazer.

Launched in time for the 2002 model year, the all-new Chevy Trailblazer was a two-row, midsize SUV with available four-wheel drive, an independent front suspension, and multi-link rear suspension. The first Trailblazer had a body-on-frame design using a midsize truck platform, with a standard 4.2-liter I-6 gas engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission, capable of 270 horsepower. Critics noted that this model had solid acceleration, making it a great choice for drivers who wanted great performance with the convenience of an SUV.

In 2003, Chevy added the EXT trim to the Trailblazer. This extended the length of the SUV by 16 inches, allowing an extra row of seats to be added. This meant the Trailblazer EXT could seat up to seven passengers. This model initially came with the same 4.2-liter I-6 gas engine as the regular-lengthTrailblazer, but this proved underpowered for a vehicle of this size. So, Chevy also offered a small-block 5.3-liter V8 gas engine with 290 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. The SS trim followed shortly thereafter, in 2006. The SS stood for Super Sport, and this model came standard with a 6.0-liter V8 gas engine, which could produce up to 395 horsepower. The Trailblazer SS also featured a stiffer sports-tuned suspension and a slightly lower profile to boost overall performance. As a result, this model could go from 0-60 miles per hour in just 5.5 seconds.

Despite these improvements, Chevy decided to discontinue the Trailblazer following the 2009 model year. In the future, the Trailblazer would only be manufactured and sold outside the USA. Drivers who wanted a midsize SUV had to make do with the new Chevy Traverse. It looked like the end of the road for the Trailblazer. But, like all good things, it was only a matter of time before the Trailblazer returned.

In 2019, Chevy re-introduced the Trailblazer at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but this time it was on a compact SUV. Before you could shout, “Honey, I shrunk the SUV,” the new Trailblazer hit the road, taking the automotive industry by storm. With a choice of two different three-cylinder gas engines, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, and a sporty style that belied a surprisingly roomy interior, the new Trailblazer was ready to offer new adventures to drivers all over the country.

The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer

The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer represents the newest and most advanced crossover model that Chevy has ever made. Drivers get a choice of two great engines, a 1.2-liter EcoTec I-3 and a 1.3-liter EcoTec I-3. The 1.2-liter engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), giving you 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the 1.3-liter engine comes with either a CVT or 9-speed automatic transmission and is capable of 155 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque. Whichever you choose, you are going to get great performance combined with exceptional fuel economy of up to 31 miles per gallon combined.

Chevy offers the 2022 Trailblazer with front-wheel drive, with optional all-wheel drive available on models with the 1.3-liter I-3 gas engine. Interestingly enough, the 1.3-liter engine comes with a CVT on front-wheel drive models, while the 9-speed automatic transmission is standard on all-wheel drive models.

Even though it is a compact crossover, the Trailblazer is surprisingly roomy, with up 54.4 cubic feet of trunk space. Chevy also gives you a choice of four different trims, from the practical LS and LT to the sporty RS and the off-road-ready ACTIV. The 2022 Trailblazer is also very safe and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This IIHS rating is due in part to the fact that every model of the 2022 Trailblazer comes with six advanced safety and driver assistance features as part of Chevy Safety Assist.

If You Want a Used Model, Here Are a Couple of Things to Consider

The new Trailblazer launched for the 2021 model year, and you should have no problem finding used models here on our lot. Here are a few tips if you are looking to buy one. If you love that two-tone paint job with a different color roof from the rest of the Trailblazer body, then you will have to find an RS or ACTIV trim, as this feature has only been offered on those two models.

When Chevy first offered the Trailblazer, the entry-level trim was the L, which only came with front-wheel drive and the smaller 1.2-liter I-3 gas engine. However, for 2022, this model was discontinued. So, if you want the most affordable Trailblazer L, then you will have to look for one from the 2021 model year. The LS and LT models of the Trailblazer come with a choice of front-wheel drive with the 1.2-liter engine and all-wheel drive with the 1.3-liter engine. Both the RS and ACTIV trims come with the 1.3-liter engine standard.

When it comes to infotainment, each Trailblazer has a standard Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with either a 7-inch touchscreen on the L, LS, and LT models or an 8-inch touchscreen on the RS and ACTIV. This system includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Bluetooth wireless smartphone connectivity, and a rearview camera. If you want a Bose premium audio system, then you will have to spring for either the RS or ACTIV models with this optional equipment.
