The Evolution of the Humble Pickup
It’s hard to believe that the first-ever pickup truck was designed for the most basic and utilitarian purpose: hard work. Pickup trucks are an American icon, borne of necessity and designed for laborers like farmworkers and tradesmen. It all started in 1925 with the Model T Roadster designed with a “Pickup Body” for farmers. Ford designed the Pickup Body to appeal to farmers who were already adopting the Model T for work in the fields. Little did they know that it would be the beginning of an enduring American pickup truck love affair.
Future pickup generations featured such short-lived design styles as a flat-nosed front end that resembled today’s school bus designs. That design continued into the 1960s, with manufacturers like Dodge and Ford building blunt-nosed trucks with larger beds, including an early Econoline model with an open bed. In general, performance and capability stayed on the humble end of the spectrum. It wasn’t unusual to find double-digit horsepower ratings in the earlier pickup truck models.
The first hints of a style-based design showed up at the Chevrolet factory with the Cameo Carrier in 1955. The Cameo Carrier featured more passenger car design features, like a smoother rear end and more luxurious features, like sun visors on the interior and white wall tires and chrome outside. Who can forget the car-truck hybrid models like the El Camino? These vehicles enjoyed cult-like status but were ultimately short-lived. It seemed buyers wanted a true pickup.
Soon, pickup trucks started offering more interior space via crew cab designs. Now defunct manufacturer International was the first to offer a crew cab, followed by Dodge and Ford. These early versions were people haulers and nothing more, with spartan finishes and few comforts.
Since then, manufacturers have experimented with everything from compact pickups to high-performance street racers, but all along the continuum was the burgeoning trend of infusing these previously simple vehicles with next-level luxury and comfort features.
